The International Cognitive Approaches Network (or ICAN) was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 2019 to expand on the work begun by The CO-OP Academy. The inaugural meeting of the Academy was held in Germany in 2009 and was given international endorsement at the Invitational CO-OP Meeting of researchers, clinicians, and educators from North America, Europe, and Australia held in Toronto in 2011.
To optimize people’s participation and engagement in daily life through a variety of cognitive approaches including Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP).
The ICAN, formerly known as “The CO-OP Academy”, is a not-for-profit corporation whose mission is to advance the development and evidence base of the Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) Approach and other cognitive approaches, to lead CO-OP knowledge translation, quality assurance and mentorship and to provide a forum for international networking among CO-OP researchers, trainers, practitioners and consumers. The ICAN also offers CO-OP courses and other relevant materials.
The ICAN values international collaboration, sharing, quality, responsibility, egalitarianism, excellence, integrity and diversity.
The ICAN currently has three committees: networking/communication, knowledge translation and an executive committee with a chair, vice chair, secretary, treasurer and two international members.
CO-OP instructors must use the CO-OP logo on communication mediums (e.g. pamphlets, websites) and inform ICAN of its usage. Others are not permitted to use the CO-OP logo without express permission of the ICAN's executive committee.
